Is switching to RCI points the right move?

Ask the Timeshare Crusader / February, 2013

I purchased a timeshare about 10 years ago and since then, it has switched over to RCI Points. I have not yet converted because I'm really not sure if points are the better way to go. I've done some checking on RedWeek.com and other forums, but those leave me more confused. Can you help?

Thanks for a great question. You are not alone in your confusion. RCI Points used to be fairly simple to both understand and use. However, things have gotten much more complicated over time and it can be very difficult to determine if points are better for you.

Here are what I consider to be the most salient "points" about RCI Points:

  1. If you tend to return to your home resort more than exchange, points are not for you.
  2. If you can devote more time to vacation planning, points may work out well for you.
  3. If you typically use different sized timeshare units and/or tend to vacation for periods longer or shorter than a week, points may work out well for you.
  4. If you're satisfied with what you have (meaning you understand the system) and it has worked for you in terms of exchanging, etc., then don't fix what isn't broken!

I hope to host an RCI Points webinar later this year; please watch the RedWeek newsletter for details. I hope this answer helps in making a decision.
