I have both rented from other people and rented my own timeshare to other people.
My best advice is that when you consider renting from someone else you do the following: 1. Establish exact dates of the existing reservation. 2. Establish the exact view category (islandview, oceanview, oceanfront) that the person owns. 3. Establish what specific location in the resort they have requested. 4. Get the exact reservation number from the person you are renting from and check to make sure that it does exist, and confirm check-in dates and view category. Once you have established these things, then you really know what your buying. ***Don't rely on someone who tries to rent you an "islandview" unit that says "I always request and get an oceanview"... Maui Ocean Club will most likely NOT honor that request. Lastly get a rental agreement that lists you as the "renter" with the exact reservation number on it.
When I rent the units I usually just "add" the renters name to the reservation. I don't take my (owners name) off the reservation because there are certain things that are provided to owners that are not provided to renters... for example free parking.
