Security Deposit
I want to rent out my Westgate week and was told by them that I would be responsible for any possible damages. Is it usual to ask for a security deposit when posting a timeshare rental? What amount? How are those funds handled? When we have rented houses for a week, we paid by check including the security deposit which was returned to us 2 weeks after we left. Does it work the same for timeshares?

Yes, ultimately it is the responsibility of the timeshare week owner concerning any damage that may occur, although I've heard very few incidents of damage from renters.
In the end it's up to you if you ask for a damage deposit. How much and how it's handled is also up to you and should be part of the written contract stipulating all details of the rental and would be signed by both you and the renter.
Having said that, resorts always demand a copy of the occupant's credit card. I'm sure they would go after the renter if there was damage, but if the renter refuses to pay then the resort would come after you.
