August Newsletter Q&A: What To Do When Contacted by A Scammer

Aug 16, 2012

Timeshare Crusader Lisa Ann Schreier answers the following question in this month's newsletter:

We were recently approached by a buyer interested in purchasing our timeshare. We'd agreed on a price and were ready to start the closing when our buyer suddenly had to leave town. He sent us a check for $3,900 to hold our timeshare, but asked us to keep $2,900 and send a $1,000 check to his broker. Something seems fishy to me. What do you suggest?

You are right to smell the fish ..... this is just another form of the Nigerian Lottery scam. Your bank will tell you that the check is bogus, however what the scammers were hoping you would do is deposit the bogus check in the bank then write a legitimate check to the broker .... later the bank would notify you of the scam = $1000 out of your account..
