Usually or at least the owner isn't collecting any money for taxes. But in some locations (Maui, Jamaica, and some others) the gov't charges something like an occupancy tax which is paid directly to the resort. This may not be noted in the ad but should be disclosed when you contact the owner. When in doubt always ask the owner directly.
