Anyone have experience with timeshares?

I know not to get a timeshare but I caved for my wife(at the time) and we got it. A year or two later we divorced and I was stuck with it. It's paid off and I'm tired of paying the yearly fee of about$500. I've tried selling it. I've asked them to take it back and sell the junk to someone else, I'd just sign it back over to them. Just a suggestion try renting it out or using it until you can find another owner to take it off your hands . I gave two timeshares back to the home resorts through deed backs in 2011 . I still own one on the Las Vegas strip that I won't give up for anything . I only use it for Las Vegas and as a matter of fact I'll going there on May 1st . I have never had a problem booking my week or renting it out if I'm not using it .

You must have enjoyed your vacation there when you purchased your timeshare or you wouldn't have bought it . Maybe a vacation will help you decide whether to keep it or not . You might even have family members or coworkers who might be interested in renting it from you . Good luck .

The first and foremost rule is to never, ever pay anyone or any company a large, upfront fee to sell, rent out, market, or "cancel" your timeshare. Those are usually scams. When you asked the resort to take your unit back, with whom were you speaking? You have to contact the resort's Homeowners' Association. Explain your situation and that you will not be paying another nickle in maintenance fees so it would be best for all involved for the HOA to take your unit back. The HOA might ask you to pay closing costs.

The other option is to list your unit for sale. I know you said you tried but at what price did you list it? Most timeshares out there are worth in the neighborhood of $0 or less. You can try listing it for give away here on RedWeek. You can also try Timeshare Users Group (aka "TUG"; tugbbs.com) where they have a Bargain Deals section that allows you to advertise for free that you want to give your unit away. You might make the offer to pay closing costs and maybe even the next maintenance fee.
