Should we expect a refund from the owner since the resort refunded them for our stay?

Sep 02, 2025

We had a bed bug issue at the resort where we stayed. We didn't see any until the morning of our sixth day. Only seeing one that morning, after seeing zero signs the entire time (believe me we checked), I convinced my wife not to panic and carry on with our plans for that day. Unfortunately, we saw two more the next morning and checked out immediately. Our original check out was set for the next day.

The owner isn't willing to refund our stay even though the resort refunded them the day we checked out. He believes since we stayed there for most of the term, there should be no compensation from him to us; even though the resort refunded him.

Is there any precedence for a refund on something like this from an owner?

Below is the initial few messages, there are others (mostly from me requesting him to engage).

Message I sent RedWeek: We had a bed bug issue during our stay, and the resort let us know that the owner was refunded their points. What does that mean for us as renters? Do we then receive compensation in return from the owner?

RedWeek's reply; they then opened a dialog between the owner and myself: Please note, as we have disbursed funds to the owner, there is nothing RedWeek can do. Owner, please reply to your guest to advise how you can assist, as RedWeek is no longer in receipt of the funds as per the contract.

Owner's reply: were you unable to stay there

My reply to the owner: Yes, we were able to stay there as we didn't discover the first bed bug until Thursday (6th day); which led us to check out early. The ability to stay there isn't really the issue though, it's the fallout from having bedbugs in a room that your family and belongings have occupied for almost a week. The nervousness sets in, the fear of bringing them home, the feeling of being dirty and knowing things have been crawling on your skin, clothes, suitcases, food, etc. It's the frantic chaos of washing everything that can be washed, bagging everything for months that can't be washed, throwing everything else away for fear it may have eggs or larvae. We spent two weeks dealing with all of this trying to guarantee we didn't bring anything back home with us, while also trying to get back to our normal routines. We've found two bedbugs at home so far, one alive and one dead. We have no idea if we did everything well enough to ensure we don't have a continuing issue; we may not know for months. My wife has read up on her fair share of bedbug related horror stories and she's panicked to say the least. The resort didn't issue a refund because we were unable to stay there, they issued a refund because it was the right thing to do given the circumstance.
