We rented a timeshare at the Embassy at Poipu Pointe in Kauai on
Pe'e Road. Its name is soon to change to Poipu Pointe (no longer
Embassy). The rooms were lovely: granite countertops in the
kitchen, tastefully decorated, and spacious enough for our family
(three adults and three small children, ages six and under - one in
a crib). The pool was the BEST: it has a toddler area which is
sectioned off from the main pool with lava rocks. The entire pool
has a beach-like graduated entry, and is no more than three-feet
deep in the middle. There is an elevated hot tub surrounded by
lava rocks which welcomes children, and a separate adults-only
spa in another area of the resort with a lovely fountain and nice,
powerful jets. The grounds have a gorgeous koi pond which
wanders and is highlighted with waterfalls and tropical plants.
There is a koi feeding at 8:45 am at which children come to view
and feed the fish. There are also waterfalls in the pool. And a
volleyball net. There is poolside bar/restaurant service for
reasonable prices (a pina colada here is $6.95 vs. the $9.95 you
will pay at the Hyatt). They have a breakfast buffet for only $6
per person. The ocean views are breathtaking, and if you walk
toward the surf you will see huge seaturtles swimming near the
tidepools. You won't be swimming this beach, but Shipwreck
beach is a short walk away (still not friendly for small children with
its strong undertow, red flags, and surfing-waves). Poipu beach is
a short drive away, with a sectioned-off area (via lava rocks) for
the toddlers, a play structure, lovely sandy beaches, and a shave
ice stand across the street (under Brenneke's Restaurant). The
staff here at the resort is responsive: a simple request for an
extra dish towel or wine opener was fulfilled within minutes of
request. There is no business center or use of a printer, but your
PC will allow internet access for $9.95 per day (and there is
internet access for a fee in the lobby). The concierge desk is
friendly and fast, but book your activities weeks before you arrive.
We're glad we booked waterskiing before arrival, because kayak
guided tours, ziplining, and ATV tours were all sold out island-wide
for weeks in advance. We never heard back from our wait lists
(but don't blame the resorts - it's a popular place for adventure!).
Fear not: if you haven't booked a group adventure, there is plenty
of hiking and beachcombing around the island to keep you busy all
week. Any tourbook will show you trail maps and lookout points.
We've rented at three different condos/timeshares over the last
nine years, and this is our hands-down favorite. We've also visited
family at one other rental. All of them are nice and priced fairly for
what you get, but this one really knocked our socks off. We had a
wonderful vacation and plan to stay again, and will certainly
recommend it.
