The Quarter House is a wonderful place to stay! We have visited more than a dozen times and always enjoyed ourselves.
The resort itself is all apartment-style units that are each unique. The units we have stayed in all felt very spacious and were tastefully furnished in classic New Orleans style. They have separate living areas from the bedrooms as well as kitchens. There is a lovely courtyard with a small pool which is great for cooling off. The resort hosts a couple small events each week where you can grab a bite to eat or a glass of wine and meet others staying at the resort. They also offer a walking tour. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful, frequently connecting with the same staff members year to year. They are very knowledgeable of the area with wonderful recommendations and suggestions to local events, tours, transportation, restaurants, or whatever you are looking for.
As for the local area, the location is the best part of the whole thing. We grab a taxi from the airport and then we don't even need a car for the rest of the week! You can walk Chartres street right out your front door or Royal street just one block up. These are the two streets we use religiously to get through the French Quarter. They both have numerous art galleries and unique shops. Bourbon street is just a few blocks up if your into the nightlife. The river and the French market (with Cafe du Monde) are again just a few short blocks away. Access to other great parts of the city like City Park (a must see) is easy -- just go out the door and 1/2 block to Canal street and hop on the street car. Similarly if you want to tour the Garden District, the St. Charles street car comes right there to Canal street too. The nearby dining options are of course amazing as you would expect for New Orleans. I can't even do it justice, just search for restaurants on a map in the area and see the sheer number that pop up. New ones seem to open all the time. One last thing we personally enjoy is wine, and this area delivers on that too -- check out the Wine Institute of New Orleans (WINO) just a ten minute walk away, or take a short ride over to Bacchanal for some live jazz with an amazing selection of wine and tapas in a beautiful, hip backyard environment.
Despite all that entertainment right nearby the Quarter House the resort itself always presents a peaceful oasis to come back to and recharge for the next day's adventures. We've tried other hotels in the area and nothing really compares to the apartment-like feel and level of comfort you get here. A hidden gem.
